Ballarat Permaculture Guild is pleased to announce the running of the All Seasons Permaculture Design Course (ASPDC) for 2012. Our practical, hands-on course is aimed at anyone who wants a solid understanding of the principles and practices of permaculture throughout the seasons. The course runs for 1 weekend a month from February to December 2012 and focuses on issues surrounding cool temperate climate design - something that Ballarat residents are all too familiar with!

Permaculture is not limited to plant and animal agriculture but also includes community planning and development, use of appropriate technologies and adoption of concepts and philosophies that are both earth based and people centered.

Fermentation Basics

sauerkraut200Fermentation Basics

For thousands of years humans have enjoyed the distinctive flavours and nutrition of fermented foods. Add nutritional value to every-day foods by learning to make Kombucha, a tea-based fermented drink, Kefir, a probiotic-rich, yoghurt alternative and tasty sauerkraut.  All these can easily be made with simple ingredients and equipment that everyone has in their kitchen. We may even touch on mead, a popular, honey-based, alcoholic drink."

Introduction to Permaculture

Introduction to Permaculture

This is a two day course which gives participants an introduction experience of permaculture design. Participants must come to both days.  We've set up two separate 'events' for each "Intro course" so that you are clear which two days relate to your particular course.  You need to register and pay for Day One; and your payment for that includes Day Two.  (If that isn't clear, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for further info)

On Day One, we learn a little about the history of permaculture and the ethics and design principles that underpin it.  We also visit two local gardens to see how two members of BPG have implemented permaculture design.  Both are urban homes, and while one is neat and orderly and the other somewhat wild and chaotic, they both demonstrate permaculture design...

On Day Two, we learn more about permaculture design tools & techniques then visit a site where we will conduct a 'rapid site assessment' (under guidance from our tutors).  Back at base, we'll draw up a scale drawing of the property visited, then brainstorm options that might fit that property... and pop a few ideas onto the paper.  There are many different permaculture solutions that can be applied to any property, so we're not searching for a 'perfect' design - rather, a few workable ideas.  It's surprising how quickly we can understand and apply permaculture design!

Completing the Introduction to Permaculture is a great way to continue your exploration of permaculture - and helpful in deciding whether to complete a Permaculture Design Course (which we definitely recommend!)
